Chapter 7

THE ANGEL COSTUMES came along slowly. Making two white shifts with silver belts was a breeze compared to the wings. I had no idea how I would make them. But I got help from the most unexpected source—the owner and manager of Killybeg House, our five-star hotel. The beautiful curvaceous Pandora sailed into the country pub where I was having lunch with Audrey and joined us for a coffee, chat, and giggles. Not that I was in the mood for giggles, but Audrey and Pandora were. I stared into my cup and sighed while they chatted on about Christmas and their plans for the holidays.

Finally, Pandora noticed my glum look. “What’s wrong, Finola? Christmas stress?”

“More like a burn-out,” I mumbled. “Not only do I have no help at all this year, but I had to stay up all night sewing, and I still don’t have those darned costumes ready. The girls will have to go to rehearsal tonight with no wings on their angel dresses. Don’t know how on earth I’m going to make those. I’ve made one wing, but I don’t know how to attach it. Talk about a wing and not a prayer.”

“Oh.” Pandora frowned and flicked her glossy brown hair from her shoulders. “I wonder...” Then she brightened. “Oh, I know! You can make them out of cardboard that you cover with foil and attach them with rubber bands around their shoulders. I did that in fourth grade. My mom wanted to have it made, but our art teacher said we had to make them ourselves, so I came up with that idea and got an A. Only time in my entire life.”

“Well deserved,” Audrey remarked. “But I don’t think I could make it according to those descriptions. Not very good at that sort of thing.”

“Nor me,” I agreed.

“It’s super easy,” Pandora argued. “But—” she consulted her gold Rolex. “I could come around to your house later and help you, Finola. Would three o’clock be okay?”

I kissed her cheek. “You’re a darling, Pandora. You can come any time you like.” I yawned. “Sorry. I’m very tired. Can’t sleep and then I have to start the day mucking out those dratted ponies. Grace is nowhere to be found these days.”

“I heard she got a job at the stud,” Audrey announced. “Well paid too. She’ wants to be an equine nurse or something, specialising in race horses.”

“She could have told me,” I muttered, taking out my phone to check messages. “Oh yes, here are three missed calls from her. Must have been when I was teaching Terry to muck out.”

Audrey laughed. “You bitch. I bet he loved it.”

I smirked. “Not until that new so-called ‘lad’ arrived in her truck and started loading muck like there’s no tomorrow. You should have seen Terry’s face. Sexier than a Victoria’s Secrets show.”

Pandora giggled. “You’re kidding. He was dressed as if he was going to lunch with a bishop this morning.”

“No, just the dean of Cashel,” I corrected. “But, yeah, he was pretty fancy.
